senior communications leader

Our client is in search of a senior level communications professional. Responsibilities include developing and implementing comprehensive, strategic and proactive communications programs that build public and employee awareness and support of corporate objectives and accomplishments. This position will deal directly with the news media as well as supervises, integrates and coordinates the activities of the staff members assigned to Media Relations and Communications. The senior communications professional will also be responsible for providing recommendations and guidance on communications in support of Company positions and initiatives, including emergency response and crisis communications, executive correspondence and speech writing.

Responsibilities

• Direct Strategies and tactical approaches to achieve business media goals
• Manage crisis and issues management
• Produce major news releases; respond to major news media inquires
• Manage corporate approval process; works to improve process efficiency
• Manage internal and external communications support issues for the Business Unit
• Ensure message alignment amongst all business units
• Monitor news sources daily and informing the Vice President, Corporate Affairs of news pertaining to the company as well as relevant industry news
• Oversee the dissemination of news-related information, including news clips to ensure timely review and action
• Represent the Vice President, Corporate Affairs, as needed
• Conduct background interviews with key media representatives
• Develop the media skills of other team members within the department
• Oversee and orchestrate high profile media events
• Nurture and build upon existing high-level media contacts

Qualifications

• BA in journalism, communications, literature/English, or public relations
• 20 years experience in communications, preferably with significant corporate and media experience
• Accustomed to a leadership role that requires hands on writing, drafting, editing and producing of internal and external communications
• Experience building relationships with national media and advocating the company's position on key issues
• Experience preparing and implementing public affairs plans and strategies
• Demonstrated experience advising and counseling senior management on internal and external communications issues
• Experience managing a communications budget
• Excellent writer with experience drafting, editing and producing internal and external communications
• Adept at building relationships especially within the media on a national level
• Thorough understanding of news media strategy and placement practices
• Expertise in leveraging all necessary means of communication (web, written, oral, etc.)
• Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, and influence management skills
• Ability to work in a collaborative manner with internal and external stakeholders/audiences
• Proven expertise and experience in handling news media inquiries
• Adaptable and flexible to changing conditions
• Masters Degree in journalism, communications, literature/English, or public relations preferred
• 5+ years experience in the oil and gas industry preferred
